The Elder Scrolls Online vs Fallout 76
2020-03-12 14:37
Pete Hines has valued that it is necessary to take risks in the current video game industry, although he knows that not everything went as expected.
Fallout 76 is the most particular video game in the Fallout saga to date. The title, which has a clearly experimental component in its DNA, opted for an open online world based on multiplayer experience in which initially there were no conventional NPCs. Pete Hines, senior vice president of marketing and communication at Bethesda, has reflected on the highlights and shadows of this video game.

The studio felt that fans were demanding a multiplayer Fallout, but we already got TESO
Commercial stumble, the saga did not know how to pick up the slack of a Fallout 4 awarded at the BAFTA, The Game Awards or the 2015 DICE Awards. Fallout 76 was the first multiplayer game developed entirely by Behtesda Game Studios; The Elder Scrolls Online was commissioned by Zenimax Online. According to Hines, fans of both Elder Scrolls and Fallout were asking for a new iteration of two sagas based on an always online world. And they do it like that. They risked.
"We tried something that was a big change in the direction of each study," he begins by saying of these installments. “Just because it didn't turn out well doesn't mean you shouldn't have; it just means you have to learn the lesson of what didn't work properly so that the next time you try something really different you can avoid some of those problems. ”
His reflection goes further and justifies why Fallout 76 must exist, despite everything. Fallout 76's main raison d'etre was that the studio felt that multiplayer and shared experience was something that most Elder Scrolls and Fallout fans were asking for. So they made the decision that they wanted to expand a bit and try something different; without the exclusion of playing the kind of games for which they are known. "
"We are not done with this," he insists. "We wanted to create something that was much more shared and online to see what it would be like [...] If not, you stay pigeonholed in always making the same type of games," he continues. Take Horizon: Zero Dawn as an example in Guerrilla Games, something diametrically opposed to what the Dutch studio had worked to date, where Killzone was its main hallmark.
The Elder Scrolls Online is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC; for a couple of years, but it keeps updating with huge events and content.
